Hickory Horn Devil

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

Went out to Weymouth Woods, which is lovely this time of year (except that it is seed tick season dangit). Standing there talking to a Ranger when he stops mid sentence and walks over to a nearby sapling and points out this monster caterpiller—the Hickory Horn Devil.

It was huge—easily the biggest caterpiller I’ve ever seen and it loves walnut and hickory. Made quite a face at me, too. This is the fellow that becomes the Citheronia regalis, the Regal Moth, also known as Royal Walnut moth. I shot this with the digital, but hopefully have some decent macro shots on the film.
